There’s a tree by the lake, older than time itself. We call it the Wishing Tree. The thing is, once the Tree has granted your wish, it wants something in return.
How do you stop yourself from buying your own happiness with other people’s misfortune? This is the problem confronting Olivia Linden after the Wishing Tree begins granting her wishes. For a small wish, there is a small price. A big wish, a big price. The catch is that the wishes don’t cost the wisher directly. What will it take for Olivia to decide that the price of her dreams is too high?
Growing up in Eldersby, Olivia has heard all of the local legends about the Wishing Tree but she never believed there was any truth to them. After a very public humiliation (in front of the best friend with whom she is secretly in love), Olivia decides to find out.
The next day a freak accident befalls her arch-nemesis and the starting quarterback takes an interest in Olivia. It seems too good to be true. Olivia makes another wish, and another. If wishes are a drug, then the Tree is her dealer and Olivia very quickly becomes an addict. At first, she doesn’t make the connection between her wishes and their unintended consequences. Too late, Olivia realizes that nothing comes for free and eventually she will have to pay for her mistakes.
