Ladye Lyra Vega has hardly ever ventured outside the White Wall of Londinium, an oligarchy ruled by the Quinque Electi. Lyra belongs to the privileged Regent caste and her father is the scientist behind Felix Somnus (“Happy Sleep”), the drug to which half of Londinium is addicted. She is betrothed to a member of the Quinque Electi and her life seems all mapped out for her.
Then, on the night of her twenty-second birthday, Lyra comes home to find her parents with their throats slit. Wrongly accused and unfairly convicted, Lyra is sentenced to life in Londinium’s most notorious prison, the Sídhe. When Lyra arrives in the Sídhe, however, she discovers she has been transported to a parallel world where she must fight for survival. Stripped of her rank and citizenship, Lyra becomes a Wraith.
Lyra the Wraith is determined to escape from the Sídhe and bring justice to those responsible for murdering her parents. But before she can escape, Lyra must first survive the Sídhe. She makes friends and enemies in equal measure and, despite herself, falls in love again. The longer Lyra dwells in the Sídhe, the more she realizes that everything she thought she knew about Londinium was a lie. Eventually, Lyra will have to choose between the man she loves and avenging her family. The novel ends with Lyra’s escaping to Londinium while vowing to return to the Sídhe for her lover. Lyra’s struggle against the Quinque Electi has only just begun.

Kristina Pérez is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Journalism and Media Studies Centre at the University of Hong Kong. She is also the author of A Hedonist’s Guide to Beijing and writes regularly for the Wall Street Journal Asia, American Express, CNNGo.com, and Condé Nast Traveler. Kristina received her PhD from the University of Cambridge. Her first fiction and non-fiction titles are forthcoming. When not writing, she can be found singing in the Kassia Choir of Hong Kong.
